- Description
- Aims
- The aim is to make students aware that a massive database is not understandable and needs to be sorted. They will see how.
- Outcomes
-
- Comprehension Students will have understood that statistics are related to make information understandable. They will become aware that water needs to be saved
- Knowledge Students will know how to sort data with a spreadsheet (they will know its basic functions) . They will know usul statistical types of graphics (circular, histograms)
- Analysis Students will be able to analyse a a complex situation through making a graphic
- Application Students will use their new knowledge to create a leaflet of consumption tips.

A real-life big dataset
60 minutes)
-
Discuss104A big dataset concerning our students' water consumption habits is projected (see attachement). Open question : what can you say about it? Projector HD allows to see more precisely and zoom if necessary in the large amount of data for students situated at the back of the classtoom. Brightness and sharpness are so good that no need to use the curtains and switch off the light
-
Collaborate204Each group decides and writes a post on Padlet (that is projected in live) explaining why such database is not convenient to exploit the information.
-
Investigate302Via GoogleDrive, students download the dataset and decide ONE column to be sorted and also decide the way they want to show results. They start learning by themselves how to use a spreadsheet (see attachement)

Investigate401At home, students investigate on the Web how to use a spreadsheet (video tutorials or other ways). A bank of resources is given if needed

Producing a analyzing
60 minutes)
-
Collaborate302Using the online spreadsheet : Students sort one column of the dataset, calculate percentage for each given answer and create a graphic (they decide which one is the best)
-
Produce30A shared slideshow tool (Google) is projected. Each group pastes in it the graphic they have done. They also analyze the result and write a sentence about it. Projectot HD displays a large image allowing to present them all

Use of the product (slideshow) in another subject
30 minutes)
-
Discuss305Students observe the graphics created in math lesson and discuss ideas for a better water consumption using "Tricider"Web tool to decide the most relevant proposals for the next step
-
ProduceStudents produce an online leaflet of better water consumption tips
