Description
Artichokes in the world! Where? When? Who? What? How? I am choosing this topic as the province of Catania is renowned for the produce of artichokes. Ramacca, a small town near Catania, has an artichoke festival as well as Castroville in CA, USA. So the topic can be analyzed from many different points of view such as area of production, artichoke season, import/export, artichoke food industry, benefits. At the end of the project the students should know where artichokes are grown, what season they grow, what benefits they have and many different recipes. The project could end with a competition on the best and healthy artichoke dish prepared by the students.
Aims
The students should improve their vocabulary about food and cooking methods, their knowledge about nutrients, compare and contrast the production in Italy and in other countries, describe a recipe. They will have to use all the skills: reading, speaking, listening and writing. They will be more competent about the nutrients contained in artichokes, the best ways to cook them and when to introduce an artichoke dish in a diet.
Outcomes
Knowledge, Comprehension, Analysis, Evaluation, Application

I would like to introduce the theme Artichoke before actually asking the students to work on it and I would use the program 'padlet" to stick all the relevant information the students would come up while brainstorming the topic in a collaborative way! I will accept any ideas the students will come up with as artichoke is a popular vegetable in Catania, especially as street food.

I would use the team up tool to create teams of max 4 students. Each team should have a name chosen by the students and within each group, the students should have different roles: speaker, secretary, media expert, moderator
Notes:
Starting with a brainstorming on artichokes is one of the first techniques to SCAFFOLD the students learning process, connecting what they know with the new input that they are going to investigate

I would present two readings to the students: one on a small town in California that produces artichokes for the USA and the other one, on Ramacca, a small town that produces a great amount of the artichokes sold in Italy. Being the teams four I would give the same reading to two teams

The joined teams should analyze similarities and differences between the two towns' festivals and present their results with https://canvanizer.com/ Once again the students are going to be assessed in a formative way. However, they have also done a peer assessment once they have exchanged information and put the information to present them

After watching the videos, I would ask the students to get back into the original teams and decide what aspect they would like to analyze in their research topic about artichokes.

Besides practicing reading, listening, speaking, the students have the opportunity to practice using new digital devices, such as prezi, tackk, voki., https://canvanizer.com/
Notes:
The reading and watching activity are two more ways to SCAFFOLD the students' attempt to find their research questions, guiding them before they start their own search.

The presentation should be the result of students' cooperation and collaboration as they have been assigned different roles at the beginning of the project.
Notes:
Through all the project I will support my students highlighting all the positive results, efforts they will achieve and I will not criticize what they don't get immediately right, but I will suggest them to look at other aspects as well. I will show them what they are are good at (I always do that in my classes) and motivate to try new ones where they might be as successful as in the ones they are already competent in.
