- Description
- There are a lot of different search engines out there and they have different functions. By learning their differences the students learn how to search the internet effectively. To be efficiant without being sloppy is of essence when they grow up and get a job.
- Aims
- To get to know several search engines. To categorize these search engines. To use them in an assignement and motivate why they choose what search engine. Be able to make mindmaps of the facts they collect.
- Outcomes
-
- Knowledge Learn about how to learn Leanr about how to find the facts you are looking for. Learn how to collect the facts they find.
- Comprehension Understand when to use each search engine and why you are using the particular one.
- Application Use it in another context. Show that the skill is applicable in another context.
- Analysis Analys each search engines and their functions and compare them to each other.
- Affective learning outcomes Be aware of the fact that there are different kinds of search engines with different functions. Start to build up a security for when to use what so they get more efficient.

The first lesson

Investigate1526we start this three lesson sessions with a few minutes of searching each and every ones brains for which search engines they know about and then they are going to search for search engines on the internet. I do not just want to present them to the students. For 10 minutes they investigate and take notes. The last five minutes we collect everything they have come up with in an Answergarden.
-
Collaborate602Each pair chooses 4 search engines to work with to begin with. They are now to start to go through them one by one - they have 15 minutes to start with and they are going to find out: 1) how it works, 2) What it is best used for, 3) collect words in a mindmap on a paper.

The second lesson
90 minutes)
-
Produce202Use the words on the written mindmap and create a mindmap in Mindomo and sort every words under different categories.
-
Practice404Pair up with another pair and test each others search engines.
-
Read Watch Listen304After they tested them they give feedback om how they can write the instructions of how to use them. They read each others mindmaps that they shared with each other and list the instructions together.

The third lesson
70 minutes)
-
Produce302Now it is time to create a thorough list over the 4 search engines. They do this on a spreadsheet column for column which they then share with the classmates.
-
Investigate202Work in your pairs with an assignement given by me as the teacher that makes them choose the most appropriate search engine.
-
Discuss2026With one word the students sum up what they have learned during these three sessions. They can write as many words as they like but only one word at the time. We do this for five minutes and the 15 minutes that are left we discuss what we found out, what it could be used for and how to use it.
